NSW: Brogden calls for DoCS staff to come forward for inquiry

SYDNEY, April 11 AAP - NSW Department of Community Services (DOCS) staff should notbe victimised for telling the truth at a parliamentary inquiry, state opposition leaderJohn Brogden said today.

An inquiry into the embattled department was announced last night following claimsDOCS staff were failing to protect children.

Mr Brogden today urged DOCS workers to come forward and tell the truth.

"We don't want DOCS staff being victimised for telling the truth," he said.

"We want them to come forward, without the threat of victimisation from this government,to tell the truth about what's going on in DOCS."

Mr Brogden also reiterated his call for a Royal Commission into the department andfor DOCS director general Carmel Niland to be sacked.

"It is a ludicrous situation," he said.

"It's time for Carmel Niland to go and it's time for a Royal Commission.

"We want to know why only one in 10 reported cases of child abuse are being investigated."

The opposition has claimed 21 children died last year despite their cases being reportedto DOCS officers.
