Universities offer unique online educational opportunities

Since the start of the "Space Race" with the former Soviet Union, many young Americans have dreamed of careers aerospace. Today, education aimed at space-related careers may be just a mouse click away.

The University of North Dakota's John D. Odegard School of Aerospace Sciences is offering online a Master of Science in Space Studies.

The program, which is also offered on campus, includes planetary science, space engineering, astronomy, life support systems, space policy and law, space history and space-related aspects of business and management.

Online students have access to all major aspects and facilities of the program. Students via the Internet can operate a remotely controllable telescope, which will allow them to do graduate level astronomy projects.

The graduate program in space studies provides the student with the broader background necesences , history, business or law.

* One semester of English composition or technical writing

For those who do not meet the standard admissions requirements, conditional entry into the program may be possible.

Currently 120 stusary to understand the linkages between engineering, space science and policy necessary for becoming scientists, businesspeople and policy leaders in area of space science.

The program covering 33 semester hours is cutting edge, but new students do not need to be scientists or engineers. Applicants are expected to meet the following prerequisites:

* Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university with an overall grade point average of 2.75 or better or at least 3.0 for the junior and senior years of undergraduate work.

* One semester of statistics, algebra, calculus or computer science.

The program is fully accredited , and major federal financial aid is available to eligible students. Students not from North Dakota pay $774.77 per credit hour. Residents of states neighboring North Dakota, including Montana, and in-state students pay greatly reduced tuition charges.

But the University of North Dakota is not the only school in America offering innovative online education opportunities. Recently, Idaho State University kicked off its program in Renewable Energy. Students in the program can participate in most of the program's requirements through online coursework.

Boise State University offers online graduate-degree programs in nursing and educational technology. The University of Idaho offers online graduate degrees in several high-tech areas such as Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Civil Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Geological Engineering, and Mechanical Engineering.

Today people do not need to leave their communities to obtain an education in a high-tech field. Online education will continue to open the door for many to lucrative careers in technology related areas.
